Los Angeles police warned South Los Angeles residents to watch out for car thieves and burglars. Late model Hondas and Toyota appear to be the vehicle of choice, said Capt. Lillian Carranza, who heads the patrol division at the 77th Street Station. To avoid being a victim, Carranza suggested always locking your car -- don't leave a spare key in it -- and parking in well-lighted areas.

Motorcycle riders should avoid parking in the same place for an extended period, because motorcycle thieves typically ``watch'' a motorcycle for a while before loading it into a van, she said. A kill switch on the ignition or a brake-steering wheel lock can usually thwart thieves, too, she said.
