The Los Angeles City Council agreed on October 22, to draft a ballot measure calling for city elections to be held in even- rather than odd- numbered years to coincide with federal and state balloting. The council voted 12-1 to move forward with preparing the initiative, and to take up 23 other measures aimed at boosting voter interest in city elections. City officials hope changing city election dates to June and November in even-numbered years will boost voter turnout. About 20 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the 2013 city elections. In order to shift the election cycle, there would be a one-time extension of the terms of office of the mayor, council members and other officials from four to 5-1/2 years.
