Mayor Eric Garcetti joined U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald and other officials on May 5, to mark the grand opening of a subsidized housing community for women veterans at risk for homelessness. The Blue Butterfly Village includes about 70 single-family homes, each with two bedrooms, that previously served as housing for Navy personnel. Rent for the units will be subsidized, with support services available to the female veterans.

“The contributions of our servicewomen do not end when they take off their uniform, and neither do our obligations to honor their service when they return,” said Garcetti, who set a goal last year to end veteran homeless by the end of 2015.

“As mayor, I will ensure Los Angeles will not ignore the needs of our most vulnerable populations,” he said.

Councilman Joe Buscaino, who represents the area, said the village is part of an area “with deep ties to the military.”

“It is a place where families can thrive, and where women veterans can get the support they need and deserve,” he said.
