The Los Angeles Unified School District on Wednesday approved the creation of the Boys Academic Leadership Academy, a single-gender school that will be located on the campus of Washington Preparatory High School.

The school — located at 10860 S. Denker Ave. south of downtown — will open in the 2017-18 school year with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math. It will start with grades 6-9 and add one grade level each year, eventually serving some 700 students in grades 6-12, according to a statement released by the LAUSD.

The school was proposed based on research showing that an all-boys school focusing on the academic achievement and emotional growth of young males produces positive results.

“We need to do everything we can to help every student succeed,” said LAUSD Board Vice President George McKenna III. “This single-gender school may be the best fit for some boys.”

The LAUSD’s Girls Academic Leadership Academy, located at 1067 West Blvd., is scheduled to open later this year.

Also on Wednesday, the school board approved a resolution to provide voter registration cards to all high school seniors, and to encourage voter registration during graduation activities.
