The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center announced the final selections for the 29th Annual  Sistas Are Doin' It For Themselves Short Film Festival set for Saturday, March 25, through Sunday, April 10.

Founded by academy member and producer Sandra J. Evers-Manly, BHERC's "Sistas" will highlight 30+ films, which were culled from more than 1000 global entries.  The 2022 festival takes place online on www.BHERC.TV.

Also, the event will include three Zoom panels with the filmmakers on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m., Sunday, April 3, at 1 p.m., and Saturday, April 9, at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for a full festival pass. The price is the same for all age levels. Also, "Sistas" streams online 24/7.   Film lovers are encouraged to obtain tickets early and consider purchasing a ticket for a family member or friend to watch and discuss the films.

The lineup includes the following films:

“Birthday Bash” (Drama/Sus­pense) - Shireen Crutchfield, director/writer/producer - When Jason vanishes on his 10th birthday, his parents find blood.

“Celebrating Herstory Through Song” (Documentary) - Sihle Hlophe, director/producer - A film about the impact, deep love, and respect that musicians have for Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. A "hero amongst heroes," the film follows Winnie's legacy and how her illustrious career as a freedom fighter has been celebrated through song.

“Pressed” (Comedy) - Stacie Hawkins, director/writer/producer; Heather K Heath, producer - When Carmen is peer-pressured into a complete makeover for her big date, she is unpleasantly surprised by her date's reaction.

 

 

“Rooftop Date” (Romantic Drama) - Kiki Stevenson, director; Mercy Kamau, writer; Tabbz Kongoine, producer - Two lonely souls meet on a rooftop on Valentine's.

 

“Gaming & Life” (Drama) - Stephanie Soto, director/producer; Yolanda English, writer/producer - A young boy discovers the difference between playing video games and dealing with Real Life turmoil when a family member becomes ill.

 

“God, Is That You?” (Drama/Suspense) - Maya Marie Gray, director/writer; Alex Palines, Benjamin Segal, producers; Down on his luck, Tony receives an instant message from a mysterious figure claiming to be God, changing the trajectory of his life forever.

 

“She Flies Again” (Animation) - Joy Shannon, director/writer/producer; Miriam Holder-Jacobs, producer  - In the colorful world of talking seagulls, JoyJoy, a young, Black seagull dreams of becoming a Hollywood director. But when life happens instead, all her dreams are shattered, her wings are severely damaged, and she stops flying for so long that she forgets how to fly altogether.

 

“The History of Food from the Hood” (Documentary) – Amanda Scurloc, director; Dan Birman, producer - Follows a student-run business created by Crenshaw High School students in the wake of the 1992 L.A. Uprising where the students grew and sold vegetables, then created a salad dressing business involving students throughout Los Angeles, using skills learned from the program to persevere.

 

“The Lunch Date” (Family/Drama) - Aamina Green, director/writer/producer - A determined man aims to spend time with the girl he loves, but a family matter threatens to keep them apart.

“Within Oneself” (Horror) - Felicia A Mead, director/writer/producer; Alex Jokic, Marina Edwards, producers - Tasha, a chef living in Los Angeles, experiences a horrible breakup with her boyfriend. However, her life suddenly changes when Tash's friend, Ivy, introduces her to yoga.
