On April 9, Councilmember Marqueece Harris-Dawson, along with hundreds of residents and volunteers, celebrated Arbor Day and planted 220 trees on the streets surrounding Mount Carmel Recreation Center in Council District 8.

City Plants, a public-private partnership between the City of Los Angeles and six nonprofits, donated 175 fruit and shade trees that neighbors and friends were able to adopt to make their homes a greener place to live.

After the tree plantings, people enjoyed an environmental-themed community fair with food, music, hands-on educational exhibits, and family-friendly activities.

The performance by the Mount Carmel Recreation Cheer Team and food provided by South LA Café and Community Services Unlimited showcased local talent and healthy food options in South Los Angeles.

“The act of planting a tree addresses many environmental and health issues," said Harris-Dawson, "that disproportionately affect people who live in this area of the city.

Trees improve our quality of life, strengthen our environment, and play a vital role in cooling our streets and homes, filtering air, and beautifying our neighborhoods.

My dream for my district is that one day every single street will be tree-lined.”

The event was organized by City Plants in collaboration with the Mayor's Office, Council District 8, City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Streets LA (Bureau of Street Services), Los Angeles Conservation Corps, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
