If you haven’t been to Taste of Soul (TOS), where have you been? This is L.A.’s #1 one-day festival, which celebrates 12 years—count ‘em! For over a decade, TOS has been bringing the community and the Greater Los Angeles area together in brotherhood, peace and fun. This year, TOS salutes, celebrates and honors the legacy of Motown—the sound of many generations.

So, what’s the history of TOS? Well, it goes back to 2005, where the festival was a simple vision of the community coming together for a day of celebrating each other. The Los Angeles Sentinel & L.A. Watts Times Newspapers executive publisher/Bakewell Media CEO, Founder/Creator Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. and the late Brenda Marsh-Mitchell together with committed city officials, community partners and friends gave birth to the idea which is now the #1 one-day street festival in Los Angeles county.

TOS has grown to be a family festival attended by over 350,000 people from SoCal and beyond in recent years and is still growing. People come from all over for great food, music, entertainment and fellowship on Crenshaw Blvd. Over the years, TOS has become a tradition of meeting old friends and family as many plan parties and get-togethers around the event. Many attendees live on Crenshaw Blvd. and simply pull up a seat and enjoy the festivities with friends and family.

One thing TOS is known for is its vendors—food, clothes, healthcare, jobs, education, haircuts, you name it and TOS has it! But for many, the food is one of the biggest draws because the best come out to TOS. This year’s returning vendors, some of which have been with TOS since its inception, include: Harold & Belle's, Dulans, Boone’s Fish, Heavenly Delight, Brother’s BBQ, Dippin Chicken, Stone’s Jamaican to name few. This year, TOS welcomes new food vendors such as Don’t Forget The Sugar, Fat Cat & Birds, Yo Way Eatery, Nay’s Tacos, Gourmet Paper Plates and Cane Patch Kitchen also to name a few. TOS also acknowledges its non-food vendors who have been a part of TOS for years like Nu lyfe Gifts, Pride Hatz, West Love and Hustle Girl Entertainment.

One of the rising stars of TOS is its singing competition, StarQuest which is being sponsored this year by Hyundai Motors. In 2012, StarQuest debuted at the 7th annual TOS festival as a community singing competition, a creation of the Los Angeles Sentinel and Bakewell Media. StarQuest has recognized and help launch careers for past winners such as Beau Williams and Adrian Battle (2012), Nathan Davis, Jr. and Noah Jay (2013), Mothership and Tim Jr. (2014), Tia P. and Terrence Smith (2015) and Chloe Roston and Jeriell Laconn Anderson (2016).

Last year, StarQuest introduced online auditions, which were a hit with two talented artists being chosen (Minerva Larry and Ryenn Hubbard) to compete in the singing competition on the StarQuest Stage. This year, the online auditions once again produced adult finalist, Norma Richardson and kids finalist, Kennedy Chisholm, who will be joining kids finalists: Nancy Fifita, Sydney Strickland, Khadijah Hajjaj, Auriana Chisholm, Anisa Washington, K’Lynn Jackman, Jordan Jackman, Na’Miyah McCormick, Jhala Angelique, Mykira Cleopatra Church and adult finalists: Terrill Williams Carter, Byrd Duckett, Khoryawne Heads, Christopher Martin, Sharee Fogarty, Ryan Wirtz, Brandon Wattz, Kyree Sterling and Goward D. Horton II.

This year, the StarQuest Soundstage explodes with exclusive talent as Hyundai Motors brings an All-Star celebrity line-up to that includes R&B sensations Brandy and Melanie Fiona, rap legends Kool Moe Dee and Doug E. Fresh, DJ B-Hen, Candace Coles & The CJ Legacy Band and Raffia Ford.

The 102.3 KJLH Radio Free stage is back rocking the crowd with world-class and well-known entertainment. This year the stage presents R&B artist Lalah Hathaway, The Crossrhodes featuring Raheem DeVaughn and Wes Felton, legendary DJ, rapper and producer, Kid Capri and friends, R&B, funk and contemporary band DW3, and singer and songwriter Yuna. The KJLH Gospel choir will kick things off with a powerful performance. The 102.3 Radio Free stage is located on the corner of Crenshaw and Rodeo.

The 94.7 The Wave Stage continues to bring classic and timeless talent to their stage and this year will be no different. This year’s stage presents an incredible line-up which includes The GAPX band, the Ohio Players, On Tour, TOS Media Day 2016 sensations, the Connect Band and gospel group, Chosen Recovery. The Wave stage will be located at Crenshaw and Stocker.

The McDonald’s Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour will once again headline a praise-and-worship experience at the Brenda Marsh-Mitchell Gospel Stage.  Marsh-Mitchell was the late executive assistant to Bakewell, Sr. and was responsible for the TOS gospel platform for eight years before her passing in 2014. Her legacy will continue to bless TOS Nation with God-inspired talent in the form of gospel superstar Tye Tribbett, Grammy award-winning artist, Bishop Hezekiah Walker, legendary pastor and singer, Bishop Paul S. Morton, gospel singer, Brian Courtney Wilson, singer Anita Wilson, singing sensation, Jekalyn Carr and the renowned quartet voice, Paul Porter. The L.A.-area faith community will bring praise and tribute to God thanks to the efforts and work of Pastor Kelvin Sauls of Holman United Methodist Church. Songwriter Donald Lawrence will return as music director along with appearances by Christian comedienne, Small Fire and radio personality, Lonnie Hunter will host the stage. The Brenda Marsh-Mitchell Gospel Stage will be located at the intersection of Crenshaw and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevards.

With TOS being a family-friendly festival, Children’s World is back bringing fun and exciting games, activities and entertainment for children. Sponsored by Metro and Plenary Airport Infrastructure and hosted by Challengers Boys and Girls Club, Children’s World will be the spot to take your kids for some fun-filled activities. For the past four years, Children’s World host and founder of the School Tour, Randy Hankins, has brought some of the best sound and entertainment to the Children’s World Stage and this year’s lineup will continue to do just that, with performances by Artiistri, DJ Kiss, Mayseo The Magaician, BoomSquad, Prince of LA, KnsRocStar, and the DWA Drumline.

TOS always has medical, safety and law enforcement at every festival as it takes everyone’s well-being as the number one priority. Although for 12 years, this festival has been without incident, it’s always good to know certain things are covered. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the California Highway Patrol (CHP), and private security firm Able Solutions, have worked together to create safety plans to help keep the festival safe. Kaiser Permanente, Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital, Watts Health Foundation, and WKing Health Care Group are also working together to meet all possible medical needs at TOS.

Red flags will be above medical stations with California state certified medical doctors and nurses. The cooling stations are not for general public and only for people who are being treated. If there is an event or emergency of a medical nature, attendees are encouraged to visit the TOS medical stations for emergency treatment. If there are serious injuries or medical problems, patients will be moved to the event’s main medical facility #3, which is operated by Kaiser Permanente.

TOS attendees are encouraged to report any and all suspicious activity to ‘Information’ booths located on each block along Crenshaw Blvd. or to any block ambassadors wearing colored TOS t-shirts, so that they can dispatch the appropriate teams. TOS information booths are listed by color: the Yellow block has one booth, Blue Block has two booths, Red Block has two booths and Pink Block has one booth.

Please visit www.tasteofsoul.org for the DOs and DONTs lists while attending TOS. These rules help keep everybody happy and having a good time at the festival.

“You have to take care of the people who do not have the power to take care of themselves. You have to represent them in halls where they sometimes are not represented in.  If you do not do that, then you are not really on a life mission that is worthwhile.” — South Coast Air Quality Management District Chairman William A. Burke, Ed.D., from the film, “The Right to Breath”.

For nearly a quarter of a century, Burke has been at the helm of the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s Governing Board (SCAQMD), the local government agency responsible for monitoring and reporting air pollution levels as well as adopting and enforcing regulations to improve air quality for nearly 17 million residents in all of Orange County and the most populated portions of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

Burke has been a leader in air quality and environmental justice, business, healthcare, politics, international affairs, and education in the Southland since the 1970s – He has recently been reappointed to an unprecedented eighth term on the SCAQMD Board.

Burke was re-appointed last week by Speaker Anthony Rendon.  His new term begins on Jan. 15, 2018, and ends on Jan. 15, 2022. With his re-appointment to a new four-year term, Burke will be the longest tenured member and the longest-serving chairman of the SCAQMD Governing Board. He has served since he was first appointed to the post in September, 1993, by then-Speaker of the Assembly Willie L. Brown Jr.

All of Burke’s appointments have been for four years, except his first term in which he filled an unexpired term.  He is the longest continuously serving appointee of former Speaker Brown and the only Brown appointee to any board still serving today. In addition to holding this prestigious honor, Burke has the distinction of serving longer than any other previous Assembly Speaker appointee to any board in the State of California, and is one of the longest serving commissioners in the nation.

“I am looking forward with great enthusiasm to serving another four years on the SCAQMD Board,” Burke said. “We have accomplished a great deal, but we also have an enormous challenge ahead of us if we are to succeed in cleaning up the Southland’s smog. I am honored and appreciate the confidence placed in me by Speaker Rendon and the many other Speakers of the Assembly who have appointed me.”

Burke noted that when he first began serving on the SCAQMD Board, “on many days you could not see the San Gabriel Mountains.  Today, we have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful landscape and [mountain] views that make Southern California so beautiful.”  He says that the SCAQMD has an ongoing battle to fight emissions, a task that he takes very seriously to improve the quality of life for all of California’s residence.

Communities of Color don’t always understand the importance of the work SCAQMD does in order to improve the quality of life for this community.  Dr. Burke, who has been a longtime advocate for improving the quality of life for those less fortunate and under served says that “communities of color are the most vulnerable,” stated Burke. “The very nature of the things SCAQMD advocates and supervises affects our community the most and I see it as my responsibility to insure that those less fortunate are provided the best resources to improve their overall quality of life.” Stated Chairman Burke.

During his tenure as SCAQMD’s chairman, Burke has made environmental justice a centerpiece.  He has initiated numerous environmental justice programs and events to ensure that SCAQMD works toward solutions for underrepresented communities most impacted by air pollution. And he has worked to empower residents of those communities to advise and assist SCAQMD in protecting and improving public health.

Through these efforts, he has exemplified that civil rights does not dead-end at environmental justice, but that it is a continuation of the same struggle.

Two of his signature programs are an annual environmental justice conference at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and the Environmental Justice Community Partnership, a grassroots group that meets regularly to advise SCAQMD staff on key issues affecting their communities.

This week, Burke kicked off SCAQMD’s conference titled, “Making Sense of Sensors”, to help ensure that organization has an enhanced air monitoring presence in impacted communities.

In June, Burke hosted a town hall meeting in Compton to announce the initiation of the SCAQMD’s Community Air Toxics Initiative, to address concerns raised by residents about hexavalent chromium emissions from metal processing facilities in Compton and nearby Paramount.

In April, he chaired two town hall meetings to hear concerns from residents about the PBF refinery in Torrance. Under previous ownership by ExxonMobil, the refinery was cited for numerous air quality violations following a large explosion in 2015.

In January, Burke hosted a luncheon on Martin L. King Jr. Day, titled “Lifting as We Climb,” to honor Dr. King and also show the distinct intersection of civil rights with environmental justice.

Social worker and author Maryum “May May” Ali, the daughter of his late, close friend and boxing legend, Muhammad Ali, delivered the keynote address.

Drawing on the same theme, in March, Burke hosted The Cesar Chavez Day of Remembrance – An Inspirational Day on the Environment and Air Quality luncheon in conjunction with the California Latino Legislative Caucus and the Cesar Chavez Foundation.

In addition to his major contributions to environmental justice, Burke introduced and SCAQMD carried out landmark programs for children and senior citizens, as well as research on the health effects of air pollution.

“During my upcoming four-year term, I want to continue to keep SCAQMD focused on environmental justice in all communities of color across the Southland,” Burke said. “We must continue the fight of reducing pollution from all sources until we no longer have disproportionately impacted communities and everyone can breathe healthful air.”
